MURGWANZA DIOCESE & MURGWANZA HOSPITAL
The Diocese of Kagera, one of the twenty-eight dioceses in the Anglican Church of Tanzania, is located in the
North-western part of Tanzania. It borders Rwanda and Burundi to the west, Uganda to the north, and Lake Victoria
to the east. Established in August 1985 from the Diocese of Victoria Nyanza, it inherited the Murgwanza Hospital
and various deaneries covering approximately 39,000 square kilometers.Murgwanza Hospital, established in 1935 as
a dispensary by the Church Missionary Society Australia (CMSA), became an Anglican Mission Hospital in 1939.
It gained Government recognition as a Council Designated Hospital (CDH) in 1965 under President Dr. J.K. Nyerere.
Today, the hospital has a 200-bed capacity, an 81.5% bed occupancy rate, and an average of 26 admissions per 100 patients.
MURGWANZA INSTITUTE OF HEALTH AND ALLIED SCIENCES
With the support of Murgwanza Hospital, the Murgwanza Institute of Health and Allied Sciences (MURIHAS)
was opened in November 2008 and officially inaugurated on July 3, 2009. MURIHAS is a property of the Anglican
Church of Tanzania, Diocese of Kagera. From its inception, the institute has maintained a clear vision, mission,
and core values, reviewed on May 24, 2015.
The institute has grown significantly, offering programs aligned with
labor market demands, producing highly successful graduates. As we look to the future, it is our vision to develop
MURIHAS into a fully-fledged Institute of Health and Allied Sciences, offering more advanced programs in various
health and allied sciences disciplines. To achieve this the Institure is fully registered under
NACTVET Reg no:REG/HAS/102
